THE COMPANY

Founded in 1936 as a non-profit manufacturing operation, LCI has evolved into a “multi-faceted entity”. LC Industries’ (LCI) business capabilities now range from manufacturing and distribution, to retail and e-commerce. Headquartered in Durham, NC, they currently operate two distribution centers, four e-commerce websites, six manufacturing facilities and over 35 retail stores on military bases across the United States. LCI’s mission is to provide training for rewarding careers for people who are blind and visually impaired.

As one of the largest employers of blind and visually impaired people in the United States, LCI is a non-profit corporation involved in the manufacturing, distribution, retail and e-commerce industries.

THE CHALLENGE

LCI was using a TMS from a top 5 US broker, forwarder and carrier based in MN not built or designed to uniquely support LTL in addition to truckload. LTL and truckload were treated the same because the 3PL’s TMS platform was using routing guide rules not specific to customers, capacity or commitments.

Because the TMS wasn’t able to capture the right dimensions, class, or NMFC code data, they weren’t getting the best pricing. Due to the constraints of their rule-based system, LCI was forced to keep all warehouses stocked at high levels because they lacked visibility into production, warehouse, and distribution.

THE SOLUTION
